It is REQUIRED to have a minimum of two years’ experience as a peace officer, telecommunicator, or jailer; OR a bachelor’s degree and two years of teaching experience; OR a graduate degree.  

It is required to bring a laptop with Word and PowerPoint and a USB flash drive to class. Students MUST have a working knowledge of basic computer usage including Word and PowerPoint and all laptops must have the ability to save and load from a USB flash drive.

To successfully complete the course students must create, prepare and present two complete courses of instruction (15 and 30 minutes in length) to a panel of Academy Instructors to include a comprehensive Lesson Plan, Written Test and PowerPoint presentation.  Students will also create a professional biography for submission.  This course requires a significant amount of work on the part of students and they should expect to spend time working on their presentations outside of class hours. 

* For the Basic Instructor Courses, students are required to wear either department dress uniform or business casual attire on the final two days of class.
