Course Description

The 120-hour course is designed to meet training and licensing requirements set by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) necessary to prepare participants to receive their TCOLE Basic Jailer’s License. The course is designed to train jailers to work successfully and effectively in a jail correctional setting. The training will include an array of topics in an effort to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively carry out their duties and maintain control within a jail environment including basic self-defense and inmate handling techniques. Some of the course topics include booking procedures, classification of inmates, emergency procedures, facility security, inmate rights, inmate health, inmate transportation, investigations, legal aspects of use of force, report writing, searches, and suicide screening and prevention.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be eligible to test for the TCOLE Basic Jailer Licensing Examination at the Alamo Area Regional Law Enforcement Academy (AARLEA), San Antonio, Texas.

Registration Requirements

The Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE), along with L2’s, L3’s, and “Letters of Good Standing,” are required to be sent to the AARLEA in order to be accepted into the class.
